Welcome to Term 1 2026 - Art Through The Ages

In this 8-week course, students will develop and further understand the creative process and progress their art technique in a fun and supportive environment.

We will start the Term with a look at ETRUSCAN ART in ancient Italy taking in the Orientalising, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Periods of this art. We will work on handmade watercolour paper and stain the paper with coffee before working into our fresco like drawings with ink and pen.

In week 2, it will be a foray into GREEK & ROMAN ART, specifically Roman busts and Greek and Roman mosaics. We will experiment with aquarelle water soluble pencils to produce Roman bust like sculptures.

Next, it’s all about THE GRAND TOUR, specifically looking at Italy and the beautiful city of Venice.  This week, we will try a Grand Canal style Venetian landscape using a traditional artists paint palette of Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue and Venetian Red in acrylics.

Then we move into THE ART OF THE POSTER and looking at Art Nouveau, Art Deco and the artwork of Australian artist Sylvia Golf. Students will be designing their own unique “poster” taking inspiration from the art movements and Sylvia’s works using watercolour and pen and wash techniques.

Week 5 will see us look at the STREET ART and the wonderful world of Banksy. Inspired by Banksy’s artwork, themes, messages and techniques including stencilling, students will create an art work in either watercolour and Posca Pens or acrylic and Posca Pens.

And finally, we will look at POPISM, where artists relate in different ways to the legacy of Pop Art, harnessing its ability to celebrate, critique and reflect the world around us. We look at the artwork of Ken Reinhard and try our hand at “assemblage” mixing acrylic paint with recyclables, cogs and wheels and other pop culture references.

The first 6 weeks is spent learning the various techniques while the final two weeks are spent applying all of the term’s learnings into our own mini masterpieces and body of work time; just like a real life artist!
