Welcome to Term 2 2025 - The Elements of Art
In this 8-week course, students will develop and further understand the creative process and progress their art technique in a fun and supportive environment.
This term, we start with LINE & SHAPE and look at the works of various artists in art history who used line and shape. We will try our hand at continuous line, contour lines and implied line drawing to create some still life, portraiture and architecture-based drawings in charcoal.
We then move into the realm of COLOUR. Using soft pastels, we explore colour mixing and blending before putting together a landscape of analogous, complementary and split complementary colour schemes in soft pastels. Related to colour is the use of VALUE, and here we will look at variations in tone in the urban landscape using watercolours.
In the element of FORM, we will create a mother and child version of a sculpture using clay before we move into a week filled with TEXTURE, and the desert like landscapes of artist Georgia O’Keefe; complete with parched earth using cracking mediums and acrylics.
Finally, we look at how to create SPACE with ariel or atmospheric perspective, and our take on a Clarice Beckett style inspired piece in acrylic using scumbling techniques.
Then its onto our mini masterpiece body of work for the final two weeks.
We will explore drawing mediums, including charcoal and soft pastels; painting mediums including watercolours and acrylic painting and mixed media. We have a focus on drawing each week, as drawing underpins most of our process art techniques. We will also explore a variety of subject matters related to portraiture, landscapes, animals, still life, urban landscapes and the human figure.
The first 6 weeks are spent learning various techniques while in the last few weeks, you develop your own Elements of Art inspired mini Body of Work masterpiece based on the choice of techniques we looked at and developed over the course of the term!!
