Welcome to Term 3 2026 - Realism, Impressionism & Beyond!

In this 8-week course, students will develop and further understand the creative process and progress their art technique in a fun and supportive environment.

We will start the Term with a look at REALISM and the art of Courbet and Millet as well as current Australian artists Rachel Milne & Richard Claremont. The first week will explore symbol drawing versus observational drawing using oil pastels. This week, we will attempt their favourite breakfast meal.

In week 2, it will be a foray into REALISM, LIGHT & MOOD, specifically the art of JMW Turner and JM Whistler. Using soft pastels, students will look at how light and colour can change the mood and feeling of artworks.

Next, it’s all about the art of the IMPRESSIONISTS, looking at how these artists captured light, particularly Claude Monet and Australian artists Arthur Streeton and Elioth Gruner. Students will paint an impressionist inspired watercolour or acrylic winter landscape using a cool colour palette.

Then we move into AUSTRALIAN IMPRESSIONISTS, looking at Tom Roberts and Charles Condor. Students will create “9x5” Australian inspired landscapes in acrylic on canvas

Week 5 will see us look at the POST IMPRESSIONISTS and artists such as Van Gogh, Cezanne and Australia’s Grace Cossington Smith. This week we are going to use pallet knives to create textural mark making, like Van Gogh’s swirls and Cossington Smith’s macro pointillism

And finally, we will look at FAUVISM and the start of Modernism, where artists like Matisse, Derain, and later Australia’s Ken Done produced bold works of landscapes, figures and still life in “wild” colours and striking brushwork. In this final week, we will use monoprint techniques TWO ways to create bold, expressive marks and bright colour using a still life for inspiration.

The first 6 weeks is spent learning the various techniques while the final two weeks are spent applying all of the term’s learnings into our own mini masterpieces and body of work time; just like a real life artist!
